Web site could win award
A web site project
developed by the CIT's principal lecturer in information
technology, Brian Brown, has reached the finals of the
Global Bangemann Challenge. Brian will head off to Stockholm, Sweden to attend the awards ceremony to be held June 9. |
The Global Bangemann Challenge is an international competition to reward excellence in information technology projects while building a network of cities around the world involved in information sharing. CIT's entry, which is supported by the Upper Hutt City Council, is a teaching web site which was designed initially to meet the needs of internal IT students.
However, the site has become increasingly popular with users all around the world as a simple, self paced, self tested, learning experience and now attracts 25,000 visitors a week, making it one of the most popular sites in New Zealand. Building on this success Mr Brown and his colleagues now produce a CDROM derivative of the web site which has been purchased by major universities around the world for use as a teaching tool.
Reaching the final judging for these awards is a significant achievement in itself, what the CIT believes highlights the high standard of teaching it provides, as well as confirming that information technology teaching in New Zealand is up with the best in the world.
